Card Catalogues

Card cataloguing is a thing of the past, and while the cataloguing practices remain relevant, the card format itself is part of a diminishing analogue era. For more information about this phenomena, visit this post for an AMAZING article!

Regardless of whether or not you're interested in the finer points of information literacy, here is a funny little tool where you can create your own catalogue card!

Valentine's Day circa 19th Century

In honour of Valentine's Day, check out these vintage cards from the London Museum!

Most of these were made by Jonathan King and his mother in an Essex Road workshop. The cards themselves were made from paper lace and different print scraps, with some hand painted illustrations. They produced a LOT of cards in honour of Valentine's Day, a lot of which feature the common 'romantic' elements of birds, flowers, hearts and winged cherubs, but they also produced a number of 'rejection' cards that vary in message and design, with varying degrees of specific and insulting or novelty messages

The Museum of London holds over 1,700 of these cards, and the rest of the collection can be found in the Hallmark Card Company archives in Kansas City.

And now for something completely different...

ABOUT ME

Hi there!

My name is Emma Joy James (James-Maloney as of 27-10-2018) and I am The Alternate Librarian.

I'm an avid reader and internet junkie with a multimedia background currently completing a library and information services course at Victoria University. I aim to work in a face to face community environment while maintaining a strong online presence.

I will be using this blog to document my journey from student to librarian.

But first things first.

Why 'The Alternate Librarian'?

Because I'm a little different to anything the industry has seen before. I'm a customer service superstar with lip rings and ripped tights, well read and well educated with a digital obsession.

I'm classic literature and rock n' roll.

Get ready for a wild ride!

ABOUT THIS BLOG

I will be combining interesting links with personal reflections and book reviews.

Each post will be given a number of LABELS, which will form the main navigation of the site.

The labels can be found in the column to the right. Clicking one will filter the blog posts so you will only see content relevant to that label.

Want to read all my book reviews? Click the REVIEWS label, and voila! The blog will now display every post I have tagged as a review.

Want to see all of the content again? Click the HOME tab at the top of the page, it resets the post filters.

Simple, yes?
