And though the captain's golden eyes sparkled with humour, taking the sting from his reprimand, De Sardet couldn't help the embarrassed flush that suffused her pale cheeks.

Constantin was mercifully oblivious and bounded passed the pair and up onto the deck. Captain Vasco watched the prince go, then turned his intense amber gaze back on the legate.

"After you." He motioned De Sardet forward with a slight incline of his head.

The Captain was magnificent, a far cry from the stuffy nobles she was used to. De Sardet couldn't tear her eyes away, and the infatuation only grew stronger with every passing second. No way was she going to survive two months of this without embarrassing herself.

They'd dined with the captain every night, as befitting their station, and of course dragged Kurt along for the ride. She couldn't have told you a single thing they ate, only that there was wine, and it seemed to help.
